HAPPY HOLIDAYS


Holiday Issue/Year in Review Issue     This is the final issue of the Showfloor Buzz for 2006.   In recognition of the successful completion of another year of chronicling  the issues of greatest interest to all EACA members, we thought we would offer a look back at some of the significant stories we covered in 2006.
 
The EACA wishes each and everyone of our members and industry colleagues a Happy Holiday season and a Prosperous New Year!
 
The next issue of the Showfloor Buzz will be published on January 3, 2007


EACA NEWS


The EACA had a very good year in 2006.   Some of our key accomplishments this year included:

-  The association added 26 new Annual members, and 31 new members who signed up as a  “Show Only” membership to take advantage of the enhanced services of EACA’s online EAC registration system.

-  EACA’s EAC registration shows included IHA, NRA, IMTS Pack Expo, FPSA, CPP, ASTRO and RSNA.

-  EACA held its 8th Annual Meeting in Chicago, IL in July 2006.

-  EACA held its first Winter Meeting in San Diego in November 2006 in conjunction with EDPA.

-  The EACA launched the trade show industry’s first Tradeshow Credit Reporting (TCR) system. This credit bureau allows EACA members to pull trade show specific credit reports prior to extending credit to new clients.

-  EACA, once again, was a presenting sponsor of the Randy Smith Memorial Golf Classic.



YEAR IN REVIEW


Mobley  Leaves Wash. DC Center for Global Spectrum  <Trade Show Executive>
Tom Mobley, general manager and CEO  of the Washington DC Convention Center, announced that he will be joining Global Spectrum, a subsidiary of Comcast Spectacor.
 
After 20 Years, Super Show will Close     <Tradeshow Week>   The Super Show owner Sporting Goods Manufacturers Assn. on Wednesday announced that the Jan. 23-25 edition of the show will be its last.

Vegas approves $737 million convention center plan   <Expo Web News>  The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) board of directors approved a $737 million master enhancement plan for the Las Vegas Convention Center.
 
Ernest N. Morial Convention Center hosts first trade show this week since hurricane    <Expo Web News>    The Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans is opening its doors to the first trade show -- the Helen Brett Gift & Jewelry Show, which will be held at the center Feb. 17-20 in Halls E and F -- since Hurricane Katrina hit the city last fall.
 
Held in New Orleans for 54 years, the show is the longest-running trade event held in the city. The Gift and Jewelry Show is expected to attract more than 500 exhibitors and 15,000 buyers to the convention center.

Washington DC Carpenter Contract Ratified.     The new contract with the Mid-Atlantic Regional Council of Carpenters for Washington DC and Baltimore trade show work was ratified by the membership on February 25.

CEIR and IAEM finalize consolidation.
   <M&C Midweek News>  On Feb. 23, the members of the Center for Exhibition Industry Research approved a partial merger with the International Association for Exhibition Management. Beginning today, IAEM will provide administrative support and a "defined membership constituency" for CEIR, while the latter group makes its research available to IAEM and its membership.


CEIR gets new Managing Director   <Expo Web News>    Craig Nauta, who most recently served as Executive Vice President of the Mustard Seed Foundation, has joined the International Association for Exhibition Management (IAEM) as Managing Director of the Center for Exhibition Industry Research (CEIR).

New Carpenter Business Rep in DC.      Industry veteran, Ted Hoffman, has been appointed the new Business Representative for UBC Local 491 in the Baltimore –Washington DC area.      Ted has been active in the trade show industry  for thirty years, primarily with a family-owned convention services business now known as Five Star Convention Services.  Hoffman has been a union steward in the Baltimore-DC area for 10 years and has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Arts.
 
Fracalossi Resigns From E/G    <Tradeshow Week>   Exhibitgroup/Giltspur President and CEO Kim Fracalossi, who has spent the past three years trying to turn the Viad subsidiary around, has resigned to pursue other interests. Until a replacement is found, the E/G team will report to Viad COO Paul Dykstra. Fracalossi, who had been with the company since 1998, will stay on as a consultant during the transition.
 
EACA Online Credit Reporting System Availabe for Preview! . As follow up to the recent member survey on credit reports, the EACA is previewing its newly upgraded online credit reporting system today to members who had signed up to see the online demonstration.

Landmark Agreement Today with Riggers Union in Chicago Takes Effect in Two Weeks
<Trade Show Executive> Freeman and GES Exposition Services announced an agreement today with the Chicago Riggers Union that changes key rules governing crew sizes and overtime.  The five-year agreement with Local 136 , effective June 1st,  allows a significant amount of booth work to be performed with two-man crews rather than three.

2006 Intrepid Award Nominations     The Intrepid Award is awarded to the individual, organization or consortium that has made great contributions to the cause of customer service in the trade show industry.
 
The Five Finalists for the 2006 Intrepid Award are:
 
Alicia Balonek, IPC.       Alicia is the Show Manager for the IPC’s Printed Circuits Expo/APEX.

Steve Greenspan, NTP/TS2.       Steve is the Show Manager for NTP who is dedicated to the revitalization of one of the most important events in our industry, TS2.

Bob Lessin, Business Rep., Local 831   One of the most popular places for I&D companies to  provide services for their exhibitor clients is in Southern California. That’s because the quality of the workers in Decorators Local 831 and their service minded approach to display installation is second to none.   

Paul Maugeri, Berm Studios.    Paul has been a fixture at Berm Studios in their exhibit transportation department for more than 25 years.

Ken Viscovich, Int’l Rep., United Brotherhood of Carpenters.     A constant supporter of the EACA’s efforts to innovate improvements in trade show customer serviced.

Arnaudet Chosen to Manage ESCA    <Trade Show Executive>   The Exhibition Services & Contractors Association (ESCA) announced at its summer educational conference this week that it has selected The Augusta Group as its management firm and Augusta associate and industry veteran Larry Arnaudet as its Executive Director.

IMTS Block Package Pricing.   New for IMTS in 2006 is a a package of services including carpet, visqueen, cleaning, drayage, rigging labor and equipment and standard furniture. This Custom Block Package applies to all exhibitors.
   
Psuik Resigns from SDCC.        Joe Psuik, Senior Vice President/ Chief Operating Officer of the San Diego Convention Center Corporation, has recently announced his intention to resign his position at the SDCC.

Maugeri Wins 2006 Intrepid.         Paul Maugeri of Berm Studios was voted by the EACA membership as the winner of the 2006 Intrepid Award.

McEntee, Alacqua and Amodeo Elected to EACA Hall of Fame.    Jack McEntee, Pat Alacqua and Tony Amodeo, the founders of I&D, Inc (now known as Nth Degree) were elected by the members of the EACA to the 2006 Class of the EACA Hall of Fame.
 
First the Riggers, Now the Decorators’ Union Signs New Labor Agreement in Chicago      <Trade Show Executive> Following more than four months of intense negotiations, a new, five-year collective bargaining agreement with Chicago’s decorators union was announced by the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA), GES Exposition Services, Freeman and the United Steelworkers Local 17 Decorators Union. Key provisions of the contract include new straight-time windows, reduced crew sizes, random drug testing and expanded management rights.
 
Heritage Exhibits closes its doors     <Exhibit City News>  Exhibit City News is reporting that Heritage Exhibits Chicago shut down operations on Sept. 25.

Avalon Exhibits to Merge with Art Guild.     <Exhibit City News>    Effective January 1, Avalon Exhibits or New Castle, Deleware and Art Guild, Inc of Thorofare, NJ will merge.
 
David Korse Leaving IDG   <Tradeshow Week>   IDG World Expo's CEO and president, David Korse, announced he's leaving the company, effective Nov. 3.
 
12th Annual RSMGC Reaches New Highs!     The 12th Annual Randy Smith Memorial Golf Classic took place at the Berkeley Hills CC in Duluth, GA on October 9.
 
World Shoe Association Kicks in $1 Million for CEIR   <Trade Show Executive> An unexpected $1 million donation from the World Shoe Association (WSA) has opened the door for an expansion of the CEIR Exhibition Industry Index, published by the Center for Exhibition Industry Research (CEIR) for the past three years.
 
Johnson/Peterson Honored by EDPAF    The EDPA Foundation presented its first Humanitarian Award to Rich Johnson and Ted Peterson, co-founders of the Randy Smith Memorial Golf Classic, at their annual meeting in San Diego last week.
 
Goodbye, IAEM  Hello, IAEE.        In a landslide victory for proponents of change, voting members of the Intl. Assn. for Exhibition Management approved giving themselves a new name: the Intl. Assn. of Exhibitions and Events.
 
 

PASSINGS


The EACA would like to acknowledge those industry friends and colleagues that left us in 2006.

Allen Konopacki Passes Away.  Longtime industry veteran, Allen Konopacki, passed away  in March 2006.

EACA Extends Its Condolences to the O’Dowd family  on the passing of family patriarch, Jack O’Dowd in April 2006.     Three sons of Jack O’Dowd have made their mark on the trade show industry with I&D contracting companies – John O’Dowd (TERM Group), Jimmy O’Dowd (National Convention Svc.), and Kevin O’Dowd, (late of Renaissance Management).

Clay Wilkening Passes Away.     <Exhibit City News>     Clayton C. Wilkening, 81, of Lincolnshire, Ill., died April 26.    He was the beloved husband of Greta; loving father of Stephen, Raymond, Janine and Donna; and the grandfather of Jacob, David and Matthew.

Condolences to the family of Greg Rupp who passed away suddenly in Las Vegas on June 6, 2006 from a heart attack.

Casey Passes Away  <Trade Show Executive>   William Coleman Casey, the chairman of Brede Exposition Services, passed away on June 7 at the age of 77 years.

EACA would like to extend condolences to Mary Wittstock, and everyone at JB Exhibit Services, on the passing of her mother Florence (Dolly) Beckman on Saturday, June 17, 2006 of complications due to Lung Cancer.  She was diagnosed with this disease on Monday, May 29, 2006.

Manny Cortez, long-time Las Vegas CVA head, passes away     <M&C Midweek News>     A spokesperson for the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority confirmed the sad news that Manny Cortez, the LACVA's long-time president and CEO, died on June 18 after suffering a heart attack at his home.

Robert “Bob” L. Rainey Sr. 58 year’s old, member of local Teamster Union 631 for over 15 years passed away Sunday, July 9, 2006

The EACA would like to extend its condolences to Rebecca Thompson of Display Supply & Lighting and her family on the unexpected passing of her father this past week from a heart attack.
 
Gail Flannery, wife of Steve Flannery of 1220 Exhibits, and 2006 Recipient of the Randy Smith Memorial Golf Classic passed away peacefully last week with Steve by her side.
 
The EACA would like to extend its condolences to Ron Mestichelli and family on the passing of his mother last week.

The EACA would like to extend its condolences to Kurt Walker and family on the passing of Kurt’s mother last week after a battle with cancer.

The EACA is saddened to report that Roy Hornsby of Professional Display and Exhibits passed away on November 15th.
