Labor negotiations are ongoing in Vegas, San Francisco <Exhibit City News> Teamsters Local 631 is currently in negotiation for a new labor contract affecting thousands of showfloor workers in Las Vegas. An accord is expected by May 31, when the union’s current contract expires. According to Wayne R. King Sr., secretary-treasurer of Local 631, “We have a negotiating team in place and we plan to have a contract by May 31. I don’t think there are any issues we can’t come to agreement on, but if we can’t come to an agreement we will do what we have to do. We have a solid bargaining unit and we have the strength to go forward.” Meanwhile, San Francisco is also in contract negotiations for its I&D workers. A strike that was set for April 1 by the union representing 1,000 workers who help install and dismantle tradeshows throughout the Bay Area was averted by negotiating parties on March 30, when they extended their existing contract for one more month. A strike is now possible in May.
Less than seven months after the hotel workers’ union ended a lengthy campaign to have conventions and visitors boycott area hotels, the union work force employed by 53 companies to set up and take down tradeshows throughout the Bay Area is threatening to strike.
The Sign, Display & Allied Crafts Local 510 union met throughout April to negotiate a new contract with representatives of exhibition companies. The union last went on strike in 1981. Sticking points in negotiations include wage increases and a proposal to do away with overtime. The union has proposed wage increases of about $8 per hour.

Orlando Training Program
We need your support and assistance to get a focused and detailed training program off the ground in Orlando. We thank those of you that were present at the 4/18 EACA meeting at the OCCC, for those of you that missed the meeting we discussed the unveiling of a curriculum based training program that is being administered by IATSE LU 835 and supported by the EACA. In December of 2000 we all agreed upon Article 17 - Training in the EAC collective bargaining agreement with the union (see attached). Basically both sides of the table have failed to follow up on this seven year old agreement. We have been working with Bill Gearns, IA Director of Trade Show Division and the IATSE local 835 officers to formulate a comprehensive training program that can be implemented at a grass roots level and escalate during its progression. We have attached the J1 Training Standards for your review. This was initiated by the union and their desire is to create a much stronger, skilled workforce for the future. There will be a EACTC Fund Trustee Board (see attached) that will be responsible for all expenditures and approval of the same. This board will consist of three (3) EAC's and Three (3) union representatives. Training our existing labor base and adding to their skills is a key ingredient for long-term success and for keeping our local labor base competitive with other major show locations. We have been is discussion with the Orange County Convention Center and they will assist in facility space for the training classes along with some financial assistance to help get this program started. This is where we need your help. Start-up funding is needed to help expedite this program. We do not just need dollars, but input and support once we get this going. Remember, like everything in life, you can expect to receive what you put into it! Please check and see what you can contribute to this program and get back in touch. Feel free to call and discuss any concerns or questions you may have. Allow me to thank you in advance for doing your part to keep Orlando in the top three show cities in the country. Respectfully yours, Chuck Holmes EACA Orlando Chapter
