DID YOU KNOW?

For frequent airline travelers that there is a little known “rule” that you can use when you’ve been stranded by your airline.

It’s called Rule 240.

Rule 240 is a throwback to the era of the regulated airlines of  the 70s and early 80s.   In those days travelers whose flights were delayed, or were simply running late, would sidle up to the ticket counter and whisper “rule 240 me.”

Airline workers would usually oblige – putting the traveler on the next flight to their destination even if it were on a rival carrier.

Although Rule 240 was abolished in 1978 along with the heavy federal oversight of the industry, Rule 240 precepts has remained a practice by some airlines that still respect the “old rules.”

And, there are some savvy airline passengers that are still using the rule to their advantage, according to a report on About.com: Air Travel.

The article states –

“A common misconception is that all airlines are required to have a Rule 240, but they do not. And airlines have different versions of Rule 240, making it even more difficult for passengers to know their rights in the event of a delay or cancellation that has been caused by the airline.

Because Rule 240 is interpreted differently by each airline that has one, it is best to check the policy of the airline that you'll be traveling on. Arm yourself with a copy of the policy and have it with you at the airport. Some airlines may need to be reminded of their responsibilities. Others will be more fastidious and take care of their passengers, valuing their passengers' business.

When an airline is responsible for the delay or cancellation of your flight it is important to be aware of your rights as a passenger. So tote a copy of the Rule 240 for the appropriate airline (or a detailed contract of carriage for those without Rule 240 provisions) and hopefully you won't ever have to use it.”

It will take a couple of weeks to get the final results from the other locals votes.  It can be passed if the proper number of yes votes come in from these other cities.  If it is declined we will set another date to hear from the union and any additional proposals they may have at that time.  The union is aware the companies will not be liable for any retroactive payments.

INDUSTRY NEWS

CEDIA moves Spring Expo to Dallas, NSCA heads for Sin City CC <Tradeshow Week>
With its central U.S. location, ample convention space, plenty of hotel rooms and flights to and from the city, as well as an aggressive sales staff, Dallas is among Las Vegas' top competitors. But in the big league of convention bookings, you win some, and you lose some.

Such was the case in August, when Dallas landed one Las Vegas refugee, CEDIA Spring Expo, while losing another, NSCA Expo, to Sin City.

Chicago boasts brand new building, hotel in the works and plans to buy more land<Tradeshow Week>    It goes without saying that Orlando and Chicago don't stand a chance of surpassing Las Vegas as the leading host city of Tradeshow Week 200 shows, at least not any time soon. Sin City has 45 shows, or 22.5 percent of the TSW 200 market share.

But on this year's list Orlando, with 20 of the top 2006 shows, and Chicago, close behind with 18, are duking it out for second place.

Chicago is clearly within range of grabbing the No. 2 spot and doing everything possible to get there.

On Aug. 2, McCormick Place unveiled its new West building with 470,000 square feet of exhibit space and 250,000 sq. ft. of meeting space, bringing the McCormick campus' total exhibit space to 2.7 million sq. ft.
