Happy Birthday
EACA!. On May 8, 1998 more
than 75 EACs met at McCormick Place to consider the idea of
forming a national association that would not only represent the
interests of EACS but would provide enhanced services and ideas
to the entire trade show industry.
That idea was overwhelmingly endorsed that day and was the first
official meeting of the EACA.
Now we are proud to celebrate the 10th anniversary of that first
meeting, as well as the successes and achievements of our
association over the past ten years.
Congratulations to all the members, Directors, and Officers of
the EACA who have shared in the commitment and the efforts
necessary to make our association go and grow!
The EACA will be celebrating this anniversary throughout the
year and will be announcing special commemorations at our Annual
Conference in Philadelphia as well as our Winter Meeting in Boca
Raton, FL.
We invite all EACA members to help us commemorate this special
milestone with us!

Teamsters may undercut members
<Las Vegas Sun> Members of
Teamsters Local 631 complain their union is colluding with major
convention center contractors to wean them of union labor, a
suspicion that has spurred efforts to replace local Teamster
leadership with a slate of insurgent candidates.
Among the members’ complaints: that the union is reducing
their work hours — and then helping contractors hire
cheaper, nonunion laborers whose work can be billed at union-wage
prices to convention exhibitors.
GES Earnings Report Results in
Layoffs <Exhibitors
Daily> Viad Corp, parent company
of GES, announced April 25 that second quarter earnings will miss
expectations, but hopes a strong third and fourth quarter will
allow the company to meet its yearly outlook.
On April 24, GES “had a bunch of
layoffs,” said an industry source. “Layoffs were from
Las Vegas office and Corporate, which is based in
Vegas.”
The source added, “I know of at least 8 to10” who
were laid off.. He said GES held “a town hall meeting with
various groups April 24 to calm down” employees.
Reba Pittman Walker Resigns from
DC Convention Center <Washington Business Journal>
Reba Pittman Walker
resigned May 2 as chief of the struggling Washington Convention
Center Authority after 2-1/2 years in the job. A soft convention
market, lack of central hotel space and new competition from
National Harbor have fueled rumors for weeks that Walker would
step down as chief executive officer and general manager.
“I have enjoyed making a positive contribution to the
District at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center,”
Walker said in a statement May 2.
The convention authority’s chairwoman, Beverly Perry, said
Walker “wanted to step down for personal reasons, and we
honored her wish.”
However, multiple sources cited friction between Walker and
Mayor Adrian Fenty’s recent appointees to the
authority’s board as a reason for her departure. One source
close to the matter said Walker “just didn't seem to click
with the board.
