Watch those Electrical Invoices in Las Vegas!    EACA members who consolidate invoices for their exhibitor clients should be alerted to pay close attention to electrical invoices in Las Vegas.   For some time now, certain electrical contractors in Las Vegas have invoiced exhibitors for the electrical service for the entire show after the completion of the install, and before the work is done.

How is that possible you ask?   They do this by estimating that the dismantle charges will be 50% of the install charges.

If you don’t think this practice accurately represents the services rendered to your client be sure to ask for back-up to support the charges.   And, if your client doesn’t think this is a fair business practice they should be sure to let show management know of their concerns.

DEAR SHOWFLOOR BUZZ

Last week Show Floor Buzz stated there was "an interruption in the set-up" of the show last week at the Motor Trend Show (Las Vegas).

I would like to counter that rumor.  The show went in very smoothly, with work being assigned correctly to the IBEW for the construction of ‘turntables’.  There was in fact no interruption of service, or interruption to the exhibitors, everything was handled professionally, with the exception of the Teamsters sending some 15 or more “business agents” or “temporary stewards” to the show floor to “document and photograph” how the work was being assigned.

To air these issues through the Show Floor Buzz is an example of inappropriate and unprofessional response for which there is a designed grievance procedure to address the issues.  I am now aware that the Teamsters have submitted grievances on the work assignments in question, as they should, and decisions will be made accordingly.  I do not believe this publication or any other should become involve in the jurisdictional disagreements between the crafts working in the Trade Show Industry.

Finally, I have for years and continue to encourage the use of “pre-show conferences” for all Associations and Trade Shows to clarify and confirm City or area jurisdictional boundaries prior to arriving in the city for a trade show.  These jurisdictional boundaries vary from city to city, and from year to year in some cities.  The Consumer Electronics Show Association has utilized this system of pre-show conferences for several years now, and I believe if you check with them they will attest to a very low percentage of jurisdictional problems during their set-up and tear-down for the past several years.  The Unions in Las Vegas are happy to participate in this process, and I believe they would be in other cities as well.  We are not in the business of creating havoc on the show floor, we are in fact a labor source, but carry the responsibility of maintaining the jurisdictional boundaries set by the Labor Contracts negotiated with both General Contractors and Exhibitor Assigned Contractors.

Sincerely,

Gary S. Pitts

CHICAGO CHAPTER ANNOUNCEMENT

Propane Use at McCormick Place

The General Manager of McCormick Place is pleased to announce that an implementation test for propane operated fork lift trucks only has been approved by the Chicago City Council following discussion with the Chicago Fire Department.

This test will occur during Graph, PMMI (PACK Expo) and RSNA Only.  Overall use, storage and refueling procedures is the responsibility of the General Contractor and will be closely watched by the Chicago Fire Department.

The goal of the test is to demonstrate care and concern by the facility and the general service contractors.   The Chicago Fire Department does understand the competitive edge propane use has given other facilities.  If this test is successful, McCormick Place Management will began discussion with the City of Chicago to allow the use of fork lift trucks at MPEA.
