Bob Michael has joined Sho-Link, Inc. in the position of Vice-President effective December 4th. 2006.  Prior to Sho-Link, Michael was President of Excel Management Services.
 
Michael has over 27 years in the trade show industry.  He began his career in Texas providing logistics, labor and supervision to oil industry related trade show exhibitors nationwide. He spent eight years with I&D Inc. in sales and management roles before joining Freeman in 1990. He left Freeman as Vice President of I&D Services in 2005 to open Excel.
 

Exhibitor Market Study Places Exhibit Services at $5.2 billion.   At the recent EACA/EDPA Winter Meetings in San Diego, John Pavek of Exhibitor magazine presented the results of a recent market study conducted by Exhibitor on the trade show industry.  The study indicated that the overall size of the trade show and event industry is $37 billion, with the exhibit services component of that amount at 14%.   This makes the exhibit services portion of the trade show business a $5.2 billion/yr.  industry. 

 
Where is the Next Generation of Showfloor Workers?     At the recent EACA/EDPA Winter Meetings there were several EACA members that noted the absence of the next  generation of showfloor workers.    What is your company doing to identify, train and prepare for the coming shortage labor shortage?
 
Ray Pekowski, of The Expo Group notes in his company newsletter, Exposure, notes the “Boomer exit” from the workforce.   As Ray points out the numbers don’t lie.   Boomer exit:  70 million.  Replacements:  30 million.   Shortage:  40 million.

NEW ORLEANS CHAPTER ANNOUNCEMENT

All Contractor badges issued in 2006 will be accepted through the end of 2007 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center .  All other provisions of the MCC Access Policy remain in place.  
 
New badges will be required in 2008.

Davis Resigns From Chicago's MPEA   <Tradeshow Week>  Leticia Peralta Davis, the CEO of the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority, which owns and operates Chicago's McCormick Place and the Navy Pier, is stepping down from her post effective Jan. 2. Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has not yet named a replacement, according to an MPEA spokesman.

Major movements in Chicago tourism industry    <M&C Midweek News>    Greg Saunders, chairman of the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau, will leave his post in February, before the end of his one-year term, to become senior vice president of the 2,998-room Grand Hyatt Las Vegas at the Cosmopolitan Resort and Casino, currently under construction. John Patronski, executive vice president of industry development for GES Exposition Services, will serve as interim chairman until he is officially sworn in as chairman in March.

Vance Publishing Selects Hall-Erickson, Inc. to Manage the Two Largest Canadian Woodworking Shows     Hall-Erickson has been selected by Vance Publishing to manage two leading woodworking events. Both events were recently purchased by Vance from Reed Exhibitions Canada.  The Woodworking Machinery & Supply Expo (WMS), held in Toronto in odd years, was ranked #12 in the Canadian Top 50 in 2005. It is currently Salon Industriel du Bois Ouvré (SIBO), held recently in St. Hyacinthe, Quebec, will also rank in the Top 50.
 

McGrane Retires From Javits Center  <Tradeshow Week>  Jacob K. Javits Convention Center of New York President and CEO Gerald T. McQueen has confirmed to TSW that the center's general manager, Myles T. McGrane, will be retiring at the end of the year. McGrane started at the Javits Center as director of operations in 1986, and after a stint at a tech company in Atlanta he returned in 1994. "Myles has been a tremendous asset to the center over the years," McQueen said. "I wish him every success in his future endeavors."
Houston CVB head resigns    <M&C Midweek News>   Gerard J. "Jordy" Tollett, president and CEO of the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau, has resigned, a month before his contract with the city expires. The GHCVB executive committee has accepted Tollett's offer to consult for the CVB until 2008, to help with the transition once a new CEO is selected.
