Thank You MC2 / Bernie Massett
The EACA would like to extend its
thanks to Bernie Massett of MC2 for all his help with preparing
the EACA booth at the Exhibitor Show this week.
Thanks Bernie!
Neither rain, nor
sleet…..nor an interminable walk through the
bowels of the Events Center at the Mandalay Bay deterred EACA
members from attending the EACA Reception at the Exhibitor
Show.
Though not intended the event this year put to the test the
path finding skills of our members as the Reception was held in
the far recesses of the basement of the Events Center.
Those proud members that found their way were proof
positive that you can lead these horses to any watering hole
for a complimentary drink!
Special thanks to Employco Services, our EACA
Reception Sponsor, for making this year’s event
possible.

INDUSTRY NEWS
Nielsen’s Bob Krakoff
Dies Unexpectedly.
<Trade Show Executive>
The trade show industry is grieving over the sudden loss of
one of its pre-eminent leaders. Nielsen
Business Media President and CEO Robert L.
Krakoff died unexpectedly on March 22 of an apparent heart
attack. Earlier in the afternoon, Krakoff had attended
the Neal Awards luncheon at the Waldorf Astoria in New York. He
was 71.
SISO Bullish on Tradeshow
Industry <Tradeshow Week>
At the CEO Summit in Miami, the Society of Independent Show
Organizers CEO Summit shared a poll of its show organizers
which indicated the tradeshow industry’s good health.
Poll results showed that an astonishing 89
percent experienced at least some revenue growth in 2006.
What’s more, nearly the same number, 87
percent, said they anticipated the same kind of growth in
2007.
In fact, 70 percent said their growth
should be north of 6 percent. Of those who said they would grow
revenue by more than 6 percent, 44 percent anticipated growth
of at least 10 percent; 22 percent, at least 15 percent; 16
percent, at least 20 percent; and 19 percent expected revenue
to jump 30 percent.
“The point is that print is
challenged, but you can always go back to the events to make
your numbers,” said John French, president and CEO of
Penton Media.
Javits Has
the Blues Again <Tradeshow Week> New
York is writing another chapter in one of the most on-again,
off-again convention center expansion sagas in the history of
the tradeshow business.
Once again, politics are interfering in the effort to finally
start the expansion of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center of
New York before it falls irrevocably behind its
competitors.
A recent New York Times article detailed a brewing clash
between the newly elected governor of New York, Eliot Spitzer,
and New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. Spitzer is said
to be reviewing the Javits expansion with the intention to
release his assessment in early April, possibly calling for a
redesign. Bloomberg supports going forward with the current
plan.
The city and state are contributing $350 million each for the
expansion, and more than $500 million is coming from the hotel
industry.
In October, crews demolished the Yale Building, just north of
the Javits Center, in preparation for the future expansion,
according to Christopher Heywood, spokesman for NYC & Co.,
the city's convention and visitors bureau.
Interim
General Manager Expected to Land Top Job at Los Angeles
Convention Center
<Trade Show
Executive> Pouria Abbasi, who is
serving as interim general manager of the Los Angeles
Convention Center , was selected by Mayor Antonio
Villaraigosa to take over the job on a permanent basis.
Abbasi,
whose appointment is subject to approval by the city council,
would replace George Rakis, who retired last year.
Abbasi had been the executive assistant general
manager and chief operating officer of the LACC. He was
selected for the top job after a three-month nationwide search
that had as finalists Lynn Thompson, executive vice president
and general manager of the Reno-Sparks
Convention Center and Lou Pavledes, former general
manager of Cobo Conference/Exhibition Center.
Nussbaum
Teams up with ABRY to Launch B-to-B Media
Firm <Trade Show
Executive> Private equity firm ABRY Partners and
Sundance Business Enterprises, a wholly owned subsidiary formed
by David Nussbaum, former CEO of Penton Media, have joined
forces to invest in B-to-B media companies and vertically
focused online companies. ABRY has committed $100
million of equity capital to the venture, which it said should
drive at least a half-billion dollars in transactional value.
Nussbaum was the CEO of Penton Media Inc. from June of 2004
through the recently completed sale of the company to Prism
Media Holdings. Prior to that, he had been executive vice
president of Penton since 1998.
THOUGHT
FOR THE WEEK
Start it; you don't have to be fancy.
Keep moving; you don't have to go
crazy.
Visualize; you don't have to admit it.
See the end result; it doesn't have to be material.
Expect miracles; they don't have to be huge.
Pretend you've arrived; you don't have to dance on tables.
And above all else have fun. This is why you started it, right?
Life, what a trip –
