San Francisco union strike averted – for now <Exhibit City News> San Francisco’s No. 1 industry – tourism – could suffer a blow as a result of another labor dispute. A strike, set for April 1 by the union that represents 1,000 workers who help install and dismantle tradeshows throughout the Bay Area was averted as negotiating parties decided March 30 to extend the existing contract for one more month. A strike is now possible in May. Less than seven months after the hotel workers’ union ended a lengthy campaign to have conventions and visitors boycott area hotels, the union work force that is employed by 53 companies to set up and take down tradeshows throughout the Bay Area, including the Moscone Center, is threatening to strike. The Sign, Display & Allied Crafts Local 510 labor union will continue throughout the month to negotiate a new contract with representatives of exhibition companies. One sticking point in negotiations is the level of wage increases. Local 510 Business Representative Michael Hardeman said the negotiating parties would agree to extend the contract so discussions can continue, postponing the possibility of a strike for the time being. The union last went on strike in 1981.
