Rally at the Alley IV Date Set The Rally at the Alley IV will be held on March 27th at Lucky Strike Lanes in Boston. More information will be available in the coming weeks and can also be found at www.rallyatthealley.com. Sponsorship opportunities are available; please contact Sharon Bingham for details at 800-342-1482 or sbingham@championboston.com.

The Rally at the Alley is a bowl-a-thon event held in Boston every March, was founded four years ago to not only financially support the RSMGC but also as a way for New England and East Coast based companies and people to gather and show support for our industry.

This year, we are once again grateful for the opportunity to be of assistance to a local individual and her family, Bonnie DiStasio of Champion Logistics Group, Boston.

Bonnie has had a difficult year battling and eventually beating breast cancer. Until you have experienced it, no one can imagine the emotional and financial damage cancer can do to a family. Bonnie and her husband Matt have worked hard this past year to fight a terrible disease while maintaining a normal lifestyle for their two children, Gina, 11 and Anthony, 7. While insurance has covered a good portion of Bonnie's medical expenses, personal expenses such as travel to and from the hospital, parking fees and time away from work for both Bonnie and her husband Matt can quickly add up.

The Rally at the Alley is proud to be an ancillary event of the Randy Smith Memorial Golf Classic, a 501.3.c charitable organization.

DEAR SHOWFLOOR BUZZ

The following letter was sent in response to our item last week on “Exclusives”.

Heidi,

I'm glad you saw through that statement regarding exclusives. It does seem to be a position of "situation ethics"
(Editors Note:  refers to show management and general service contractor lament that the San Diego CC was considering some new exclusive services in their  building, while insisting that they reserve the right to do  the same thing to exhibitors) , which I define  as maneuvering your ethics to accommodate any situation. The irony you point out should not be lost on your readers.

Mr. Bennett, whom I've known for well over 40 years, did misspeak in terms of the outcome in Texas many years ago, although not  intentionally.   It is in fact true, that in a verdict, directed by the  Texas judge away from the jury, it was ruled that the plaintiffs failed  to prove their anti-trust allegation. If memory serves me correctly, the deciding factor was based on the concept of "relevant market", and whether or  not the plaintiffs could prove that exclusion from the OTC show would do  irreparable harm to their companies in the market place. The companies attempted to define the market as the OTC Show, while the judge saw the market  as the United States. The finding was that exclusion in Houston did not constitute elimination from opportunity in other markets, where the companies were free to offer their services.

In essence, I believe Mr. Ducate also misspeaks in stating that the  court ruled on the shows right to make rules as they see fit.  While this may  in fact be true, the outcome of that case was based on another point of law,  and if I recall correctly, did not specifically come to that conclusion.

The OTC show was truly a unique event back in the late 70's and early 80's, and required it's leaders to provide creative solutions to the challenges it presented. Having lived through that era, I can see where they thought that was the way to go for that event. Fortunately, everyone moved on, and the industry has benefited form the intense competition that has developed  over the last 2 decades. As Mr. Bennett implies in his letter, it would surely  be a mistake to return to a time where exhibitors had no choice in selecting  their service provider.

Hopefully, through dialogue such as this, our industry leaders will  address these issues in a manner that allows for solutions that provide  benefit to the one and only customer we exist to service, the exhibitor.

Thank you.

INDUSTRY NEWS

The EACA Extends Condolences to the Family of Chuck Michel on the passing of his father, Charles F. Michel who passed away on Tuesday January 22.       Chuck is in New Business Development with Group 360 Visual Communications in St. Louis, MO.

Former  SISO Chairman Lew Shomer Selected as its Executive Director<Trade Show Executive>- After a six-month process of evaluations and interviews, the board of directors of the Society of Independent Show Organizers (SISO) awarded its management contract to Shomex Productions and named Lew Shomer the  executive director. Shomer was SISO’s chairman in 2004 and served on  SISO’s Board of Directors for nine  years. His firm produces career fairs in numerous cities throughout the U.S.

Shomex will work with The Rebedeau Group  to effect the transition and will fully take the reigns at the end of the year.  The Rebedeau Group has managed the association since 2000. The SISO board recognized Mary Beth Rebedeau and her team for SISO’s considerable growth and improvements in every area.

Trap Snaps Shut on MICE North America  <Tradeshow Week> As of the end of January, the writing was on the wall for MICE (Multi Intl. Communication Experiences) North America, as most of its divisions and offices in the U.S. and Canada all but ceased to exist.
On Jan. 10, Columbia, Md.-based private equity firm JPB Enterprises bought one of MICE's largest divisions, Irvine, Calif.-based DisplayWorks. Another division, MICE Market Craft, was also on the sales block, according to a Market Craft company spokesperson. Two other divisions were shuttered: Kadoke Displays, located in Ontario, Canada, and MICE Delta, with offices in Illinois and Florida.
Of all the company's offices in the U.S. (including its corporate headquarters in Las Vegas), only two – Dallas and Atlanta – were still open at press time.

Penn Convention Center Gets Demo Go-ahead<Tradeshow  Week> The Pennsylvania Convention Center expansion in Philadelphia will continue, following a judge's recent ruling that two historic buildings on the proposed site could be razed.

The Preservation Alliance of Greater Philadelphia, which sought the injunction that stopped the demolition of the buildings in December, won't appeal the judge's decision, said John Andrew Gallery, executive director of the group.

TSEA Calls for Support of Javits CC.   Did you hear  that New York Governor Eliot Spitzer proposes to sell off the current  Javits marshaling yard and additional adjacent property earmarked for the  proposed Javits expansion? This is not good news for anyone who exhibits at Javits (and the trade show industry as a whole). It's bound to make exhibiting in NYC even more expensive that it already is.

If you exhibit at any shows in New York, TSEA is urging you to write letters to  the legislatures in Albany (please see below) asking them to reject the  present proposal of the Empire State Development Corporation. We need your  help and time is of the essence: Committee Hearings start February 11,  2008.

Please write a letter IN YOUR OWN WORDS asking that this legislation be WITHDRAWN and that the needs of the exhibitors (the ultimate customers for Javits) be made a priority. Please send a copy of  your letter to us at TSEA and to your show's management.

Thank you  for your time and consideration to help the convention and trade show  industry in New York.

Best Regards,
Steve Schuldenfrei,  President, TSEA
