EACA PEOPLE IN THE
NEWS
Olympic rookie Shannon Rowbury,
daughter of 20-year Nth Degree veteran Gary
Rowbury, will look to make her Olympic debut for the
United States this summer in Beijing. She hopes to
contend for a medal in the women's 1500m. Rowbury has
overcome injury to establish herself as one of the premier women
milers in the country. Gary and his wife Paula
will be heading from San Francisco to Beijing to watch Shannon
compete.
Hip hurting
After winning indoor nationals in the 1500m her senior
year at Duke, Rowbury began experiencing pain in her left hip.
What was at first believed to be nothing more than tendonitis by
school trainers was diagnosed in April 2007 to be a stress
fracture. "That was a very low point for me," Rowbury said. "In
late June, I started running on an alter-gravity treadmill that
allowed me to start getting back into training. By July, I was
running on the ground again. Since then, it's been just a slow
and steady build up of mileage and workouts."
Back in a big way
Rowbury made quite a splash in her return to
competition, winning the U..S. Indoor Championships in the 3000m,
the first of her career. "It was one of those things that I knew
going into the race that I had an opportunity to win," Rowbury
said. "My training had been going really well and the3K is a
really great event for me. Regardless of what happened, the fact
that I was out there running again and racing again less than a
year after my diagnosis would have been awesome. But winning was
a storybook way to come back into it so I felt very
fortunate."
The EACA wishes Shannon great success in Beijing . We will
be rooting for her to “get on the podium” in
Beijing.

terminating its $27 million-a-year catering contract with Aramark
early next year and will seek a new food-service provider or will
