New England Auto Show to Restrict Labor Options? The Showfloor Buzz has received an unconfirmed report that the New England Auto Show is contemplating the continuance of its controversial practice of restricting exhibitor’s labor options for its show. According to last year’s show rule, all New England Auto Show exhibitors were required to use the general service contractor for labor to erect and dismantle their exhibits.

The original rationale for this rule was that the New England Auto Show was located in the Bayside Expo Center – which has an exclusive agreement with Freeman to provide all show services in the building.

Last year, the NE Auto Show moved to the public convention center in Boston (MCCA), and the rule was carried over. At that time, exhibitors and EACs that provide labor were told that the extension of this rule was temporary.   But sources tell the Buzz that the show intends to continue this rule again this year.

McCormick Place No Smoking Policy
The Buzz has recently been notified by the MPEA that there has been a significant increase in violations of the No Smoking Policy at McCormick Place recently.   I am reminding all our members in Chicago to pass the word on to all your employees that this policy is to be strictly adhered to – and that violators will be ticketed,  or dismissed from the building, or both.

Please do your best to pass the word on to all your people and let them know that if they are lighting up victory cigars over the most recent Cubs win – to do it outside the building!

Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

INDUSTRY NEWS

Trouble in New Orleans? <M&C Midweek News> The Times-Picayune has reported that the New Orleans Morial Convention Center remains "largely unbooked" for 2010 and 2011.  Tim Hemphill, the center's director of sales and marketing, told M&C that this is incorrect, but that 2010 and 2011 do look to be "a challenge" in terms of bookings.  To meet that challenge, the convention facility and the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau have put together a package offering free use of the center plus other enticements (such as free Wi-Fi and some free F&B) to meeting planners who book more than 1,000 peak room nights during select months from 2008 through 2011.

Economy Stymies Las Vegas CC Expansion <Tradeshow Week>    Citing current economic conditions, a Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority spokesman said some renovations of the Las Vegas Convention Center have been put on hold.  The previously planned renovations that involved the North and Central halls and meeting rooms will continue with a projected 2011 completion date and a cost of $395 million, according to LVCVA spokesman Jeremy Handel.  The second and third phases of the renovations have been postponed.

Newspapers' Teamsters forgo raise   <Philadelphia Daily News>    "We want to keep our jobs. We want to retire out of here," declared John Laigaie, president of Teamsters Local 628, representing drivers and other workers for the Daily News and Inquirer. "I'm too old to look for another job."

Laigaie commented after his union members voted overwhelmingly yesterday - 193-7 - to forgo a $25-a-week raise scheduled to begin Sept. 1.

SMG Selected for New Stint as Colorado Convention Center Management  <Trade Show Executive> Denver has decided it has a good thing going with SMG and has recommended that the incumbent managers of the Colorado Convention Center be awarded a new series of contracts totaling 12 years.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
