Rally at the Alley Announces Dates / Beneficiary
The 5th Annual Rally at the Alley will take place in Bostonand is scheduled for Thursday, April 2, 2009.
This year's Rally will benefit industry veteran Chris Kolesnik. Many of you know Chris from her days at Access TCA and Exhibitgroup/Giltspur, or may have worked with her since creating Cyrkdesign in 2003. Or perhaps you know her husband, Howard Bailey, a long time employee and retiree of Exhibitgroup/Giltspur.
What you may not know is that last fall Chris was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. There's never a good time to hear you have cancer, and for Chris, last fall was no exception. Just one year prior her husband developed Temporal Arteritis, leaving him partially blind in one eye and resulting in a number of procedures and ultimately surgery.
Thank you to Michael Hanifan of Sacks Exhibits for nominating Chris for this year's Rally.

INDUSTRY NEWS
CEIR Says Recession Doesn’t Affect Trade Shows <M&C Midweek News> The Center for Exhibition Industry Research last week released a study that says recessions do not have predictable or significant negative effects on the exhibition industry. "The role of exhibitions bringing products to market doesn't change in a stressful economic environment," said Doug Ducate, president and CEO of CEIR. Using data going back to the late 1960s, the report shows that key buyers continue to attend trade shows during recessions, despite any overall attendance drops or shrinking of exhibit floors. The study also pointed out that interest in trade shows, traffic density, hours spent at exhibits and the percentage of attendees planning to buy products as a result of the exhibitions do not change significantly during recessions. The data collected for the report, however, does reveal some potentially troubling long-term trends since the early or mid-1990s, such as steady declines in traffic density and falling percentages of attendees who plan to buy products as a result of exhibitions. Most worrisome, according to Ducate, is the decline in first-time attendees, down to around 34 percent in 2007, vs. a high of 42 percent in1992.
San Diego Forms Center Expansion Committee <Tradeshow Week> San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders has named 17 local and community business leaders to a newly formed Citizens' Task Force on the San Diego Convention Center Project. According to the mayor's office, the group has been asked to come up with a set of recommendations to the mayor related to the proposed expansion of the center.
Will CES snag Macworld exhibitors with iLounge Pavilion? <Expo Web News> Solidifying and clarifying last week's announcement by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) that its Consumer Electronics Show (CES) would feature an Apple-centric area going forward, CEA yesterday announced that it will host a space at the 2010 show specifically devoted to space for manufacturers of iPhone and iPod-related accessories, products and services
