EACA NEWS
ATTENTION All EACA Members. If you haven’t done so already, it’s time to renew your Contractor Security Agreement at the Orange County Convention Center.
The OCCC’s Contractor Security Agreement (CSA) must be completed by all event contractor’s that will need access to the building to service clients during the year from August 1, 2009 to July 31, 2010.
This year’s CSA agreement includes a provision for the badging of full time and temporary personnel which the OCCC will utilize to determine which event contractors are in compliance with the facility requirement. Another notable change for next year is that the annual registration fee for EACs has been reduced to $250.
If you haven’t renewed your agreement you can download the attached Orlando Contractor Security Agreement. And, if you should have any additional questions feel free to email jimwurm@eaca.com.

DEAR SHOWFLOOR BUZZ
Do you know of any policy regarding H1N1 virus for exhibition I&D in the upcoming season?
We are starting a campaign with our staff to stay healthy through the season and I would like to refer anyone to any industry documents on the subject. It seems to me that the long hours and the dry dusty hard work that goes into setting up an exhibition and the plane travel that precedes and follows it is the perfect breeding ground for contagion. INDUSTRY NEWS
Controversy Still Surrounds San Jose Labor Pact <Trade Show Executive> The trade show industry repeated its call for Team San Jose to tear up its new exclusive labor agreement with the local Teamsters union and rewrite it so that potentially disastrous legal implications are removed. Team San Jose is the not-for-profit organization which manages the San Jose McEnery Convention Center and includes the San Jose Convention & Visitors Bureau. A closely-watched meeting late last week between Team San Jose and representatives of three industry associations ended with Team San Jose agreeing to set the base hourly labor rate of $58.85 indefinitely. However, that was not enough to satisfy the associations representing show organizers and service contractors. “It is totally inadequate,” said Steven Hacker, president of the International Association of Exhibitions and Events (IAEE).
It’s Official: Wages for Three Unions Working at Javits Frozen Until Next Summer <Trade Show Executive> Scheduled 2009 raises for members of three labor unions working at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center of New York were put on hold until Summer 2010. Management of the center said the freeze in wages and benefits was a “response to these challenging economic times.” The freeze was agreed to by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the New York City District Council of Carpenters.
Diego Convention Center Expansion Gets Task Force Approval <M&C Midweek News> On Monday, the San Diego Convention Center Task Force, a group appointed by Mayor Jerry Sanders last February to evaluate plans to expand the city's convention center, approved a $753 million expansion of the facility. Financing is yet to be determined, though the task force outlined several possible sources, including an increase of the city's hotel tax, a new tax on food and beverage sales, and the implementation of the city's second Tourism Marketing District. The proposal will now move to City Hall, where the mayor will gauge business support of these financing options. Features of the expansion include 198,000 square feet of exhibit space; 108,000 square feet of new meeting rooms; 49,400 square feet of retail space, and a 500-room hotel, with 37,900 square feet of meeting space. The project is expected to break ground in 2012 and finish in 2014.
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.
