Consolidated Freightways Files for Bankruptcy, Cuts 15,500 Jobs SEATTLE (Sept. 3) - Consolidated Freightways, one of the nation's largest trucking companies, decided to shut down its U.S. operations after 73 years, saying on Labor Day that about 15,500 workers would lose their jobs. Hundreds showed up for work on the holiday only to find the offices locked, according to a union spokesman, who called it ''a slap in the face.''

Orlando Chapter Announcement Tech Week Review
The EACA Orlando Chapter can truly be proud of its efforts in contributing to this past week's Tech Fair at the Orange County Convention Center. All in all we did a good job and reached out to many folks passing on some valuable knowledge. We received good input from the attendees and thanks from them for offering this program. I am certain we have a group of interested people that want to progress and be part of continuing education. There is no doubt that the bulk of attendees were motivated by the J-1 status requirement and had that not been part of the hook we would not have had a very strong attendance. We can still do a better job of reaching out to the staff employees, new-hires, helpers, and the folks just a little interested in this industry. These people would have received so much from the classes offered by the OCCC, fire & safety, rigging, and the four great classes presented by the EAC's and Ron Fuller of Freeman Decorating. The great part of the picture was that from each corner of the table, we worked as one group to reach a goal and we should be proud of the result. We would like to thank everyone for their fantastic support and involvement. EACA Orlando Chapter
Southern California Chapter Announcement
Union Agreement Contractors in Southern California reached agreement on a new labor agreement with Decorators Local 831 at 9:34pm on August 27. The new contract, which became effective on September 1, was developed in a true spirit of collaboration among all parties to this negotiation, and all should be proud of the role they played. Not only was a new agreement crafted for the next three years, but working relationships between labor and management were enhanced as all walked away from the experience in a positive frame of mind. Once again, Southern California has demonstrated why the quality of labor there, and the services they perform, are unsurpassed in our industry. Kudos to all involved.
Any members that would like additional details about the new contract can contact Bob Lessin at Local 831 or Mike Kadow, Southern California Chapter President.
Chapter Meeting The Southern California Chapter of the EACA met on August 28 at the Anaheim Convention Center to review current issues there. The following items were discussed.
Member Perks. Rick Goldammer of Freeman suggested that a master list of all EAC vendors and suppliers would be helpful to EACA members. To accomplish this, Rick requested that all members send their vendor lists to him (by email at goldar@totalshow.com, or by fax at 714-254-3747. Rick will compile all lists and see that copies of the master lists back out to the Southern California membership.
Anaheim Facility Update. Many thanks to David Meek of the Anaheim Convention Center for his excellent update. All members are reminded to be sure to wear their photo IDs at all times in the building. Also all members are urged to review safety and security issues with their personnel regarding drug and alcohol use at Car Park 6 during working hours. Such use must be curtailed immediately. David also mentioned that there has been some damage to the building recently and requests that all members assist him in taking good care of the center. Those contractors who are found responsible for creating any damage will may be held responsible for its repair.
David also wanted EACA members to take note that the ANCC doesn't charge for parking, has a promising looking calendar for the 1st Quarter of 2003, and that he will look into the idea of providing space rental for EACs that may want to store equipment at the center.
San Diego Facility Update. Joe Psuik was unable to attend the meeting but faxed the minute of the recent quarterly contractors meeting in San Diego. The big issues there are:
Parking. The No Parking signs along the curb will be covered at peak contractor traffic times to allow for parking. However at other times when the signs are not covered, Joe expects that all contractors will adhere to the No Parking signs. Furthermore the curbside lane is not to be used as a staging area.
Marshalling Yard. A marshalling yard has still not been established.
Damage. Please be responsible and report damage to the facility when it occurs.
No Smoking. There is No Smoking on the Docks and sunflower seeds are banned from the facility. The EACA would like to extend its many thanks to Greg Smith of the Anaheim Convention Center for graciously agreeing to allow us to use room 211-A for the meeting. We also wanted to thank the entire center staff including Ed Barnes, Rose Chavira and Lorraine Dovetko for their support and professionalism. David Meek gave a wonderful presentation that gave us lots of information to pass along to our members. Our entire membership went away with a warm feeling about this wonderful center we go to work in everyday. Thanks to all.

EACA PEOPLE IN THE NEWS
Curt Mason Continues to Support Trade Show Clients. While shocked and extremely disappointed with the recent Chapter 11 filing of his former employer, Consolidate Freightways, Curt Mason continues to look out for the best interests of his trade show clients. In true can do fashion, Curt has been on the phone constantly with CF terminals and freight forwarders around the country to make sure that trade show bound freight reaches its destination. The EACA would like to applaud Curt for his efforts at a time that is sure to be very difficult for him personally and professionally. Any members or industry colleagues that may want to contact Curt to offer their support can reach him on his email at curtmason@hotmail.com, or on his cell phone at 708-205-1753.
Dennis Rapolti, a tradeshow veteran passes. Dennis Rapolti, former employee of Exhibitgroup/Giltspur passed away this past Sunday. Dennis had worked with Exhibitgroup/Giltspur for 36 years before his retirement in March 2002. Rapolit came to EG/G after working in the Advertising industry on the west coast earlier in his career. During his career in advertising, he met and married his wife, Omagene, and moved to Pittsburgh shortly after. Dennis began his career at GRS&W as an assistant/field supervisor and worked with various accounts including IBM, and Rheem.
Over the years he expanded his field supervision duties to include PPG, J&L Steel, Pittsburgh Corning and others. One of his primary accounts Bayer Diagnostics, he worked with beginning in 1973 through this past year. He also provided his services on any number of additional accounts such as Hershey Foods and the US Postal Service. Dennis always made Exhibitgroup/Giltspur clients' needs his first priority and we all knew that sets would run smoothly under his watch. He also had a knack for adapting to the diverse personalities he met and dealt with, and subsequently forged strong client relationships.
In addition to his duties at Exhibitgroup/Giltspur, Dennis was a knowledgeable antique collector and dealer, as well as a certified appraiser. Dennis maintained a shop in the Regent Square area in Pittsburgh, which his wife Omagene managed over the years. While Dennis was on the road he was known not only in every tradeshow venue in the country, but in many antiques shops in various cities as well. In his down time on the road he would browse for deals in those shops and acquire additions to his collection or items he could resell in his own shop.
Dennis was most certainly one of the most unique and well known personalities in our industry and will most certainly be missed by many.
