More than 250 industry professionals (including 228
golfers) attended the 9th Annual Randy Smith Memorial Golf
Classic on Monday, October 13 at the Berkeley Hills Country
Club in Duluth GA.
Benefitting trade show industry professionals and their
families who have suffered financial hardship due to death,
sickness or injury, the Randy Smith Memorial Golf Classic had
six beneficiaries this year. This years recipients
included the family of the late Trevor Burton of Pinnacle
Exhibits in Hillsboro, Or., the family of the late Steve Pomper
of Expotechnik in Atlanta, the family of the late Bruce
Herrendeen of Derse, the family of the late John "Mike" Hiller
of VIAD / Exhibit Group and the family of the late Bruce Carl
of Champion Transportation in Chicago. Also included in this
years recipient list is Dalene Threeton of GES in Las Vegas who
tragically lost her new born child. "As always, we are reminded
that what has happened to all of our recipients could have
happened to any one of us." said co founder and event director,
Rich Johnson, of Renaissance Management.
In addition to an 18 hole scramble format golf tournament there
are other activities that surround the event such as a cart
decorating contest, on course prizes and a dinner banquet in
which the recipient families address the attendees to express
their gratitude and appreciation.
The organizers of the RSMGC originally started this event in
recognition that in reality those of us that make their living
in this industry are part of one big family. "We work
together, play together, share good times with one another, and
support each other in times of trouble - just like a family,"
said Rich Johnson, co-founder of the RSMGC along with Ted
Peterson. "So, it's important that we all remember that
what happened to any of our recipients could have easily
happened to any of us, and this is your best opportunity to
reach out and lend a hand to a family member that is in need."
Johnson said.
In total, the Randy Smith Memorial Golf Classic has helped over
25 industry families over it's nine year
existence.
